The USS Akron, a rigid airship commissioned by the U.S. Navy, crashed in 1933, killing 76. This postal cover was produced by the Lakewood Stamp Society to honor the lives lost. What makes this cover special is the fabric swatch attached to the back of the cover salvaged from the ship in the Atlantic Ocean.

“USS Akron (ZRS-4) was a helium-filled rigid airship of the U.S. Navy which operated between September 1931 and April 1933. She was the world’s first purpose-built flying aircraft carrier, carrying F9C Sparrowhawk fighter planes which could be launched and recovered while she was in flight. With an overall length of 785 ft (239 m), the Akron and her sister ship the Macon were among the largest flying objects ever built. Although the LZ129 Hindenburg and the LZ130 Graf Zeppelin II were some 18 ft (5.5 m) longer and slightly more voluminous, the two German airships were filled with hydrogen, so the US Navy craft still holds the world record for helium-filled airships.

The Akron was destroyed in a thunderstorm off the coast of New Jersey on the morning of 4 April 1933, killing 73 of the 76 crewmen and passengers. This accident involved the greatest loss of life in an airship crash.”

I have had this scanner for almost 4 years and scanned everything from brochures, photos, receipts and multiple sizes of papers.  It scans at 30 pages per minute and can do the front and back at the same time.  The scanning speed is very fast but it is quiet too.   It is easy to clean the scanning mechanism after scanning a dusty scrapbook or old photo.  Making the next scan as good as the first!

Unreal speed and accuracy. I have used at least 5 different scanners trying to find one that would handle years of old paperwork. I have thousands of tiny fuel receipts on crumpled carbon paper that no scanner would scan without jamming. This thing scans them so fast and hasn't missed a single one. It had literally saved me over 24 hours of work. Never thought a scanner would add days to my life but this one has. Can't recommend enough.

This thing is super fast. Have used it mostly for photos so far. Only using the default Snap Scan software which works fine especially when you take advantage of profiles as YouTube videos explain. Will try the Neat software when we get to important documents to enable a paperless office type environment. Thankfully the unit is pretty small when closed so doesn't take much counter space.

I loved this scanner! The Fujitsu customer service is excellent. The software is compatible with my iMac. I loved the double-sided scanning, which is great for scanning books. The scanner was very sensitive, it detected when two pages were stuck together. The software allowed for immediate discarding of pages that scanned incorrectly. It was great at continuing the scan.

What I Use to Scan 35mm Slides and Negatives

If you are looking for an all in one negative/slide/photo scanner look no further.  This thing is great.  There is a brief learning curve and you need to experiment with all the settings and how to use the included holders.  Also, when working with negatives and slides dust is not your friend. Compressed air and a soft brush are helpful.  We have been using the Espon V550 everyday for over a year and have had zero issues.

I would buy it again

Overall, I love it and I would buy it again. It has met or exceeded my expectations and has really made my scanning hobby quicker and more fun. I have probably scanned somewhere in the neighborhood of 2500-3000 pics since I bought it and the moving scanner piece has just recently begun to make some noise at the lower end of the scanning window upon return, kind of like a scraping noise. The scan functionality is absolutely fine, but the noise has me a bit worried that something might go wrong soon.

I purchased this scanner after my printer/scanner combo quit working. I decided to just get a dedicated scanner and this scanner fills the bill perfectly. First of all the added bonus of being able to scan film negatives and slides is a huge plus. The quality of this scanner exceeds the quality of my dedicated film scanner plus it can handle much more different types of film and negatives

I had a less expensive Epson scanner and it did a fine job on regular size negatives and photos. But it didn't work for those old large black and white negatives. This one does. It copies book pages as well a all types of negatives. I am also scanning documents with it. Very fast on the documents, fast on photographs and much slower when i comes to negatives. But the quality is great and once you figure out how to do it, it's like second nature.
