St. Louis, like many Midwestern cities, expanded in the early 20th century due to industrialization, which provided jobs to new generations of immigrants and migrants from the South. It reached its peak population of 856,796 at the 1950 census.

Picture the city of St. Louis without the Gateway Arch, that is hard! The arch was built in the 1960s. This postcard dates to the 1930s and shows St. Louis as it would have looked in its golden age.
